'HEROES OF THE NIGHT' | Dorr Fire Chief thanks two women who saved man from burning car

After witnessing a crash on Friday June 14, two women jumped out of their car to help a man who was hurt.

DORR, Mich. — Two West Michigan women are being called heroes by a local fire department after they helped a man badly injured in a four-car crash last week.

Danielle Casarez and her fiancé Chyanne Saucier were driving on US-131 on their way back from Kalamazoo on Friday, June 14 during rush hour when a multiple-car crash happened right in front of them.

Instead of sitting in their car, however, they jumped out to help a man hurt in the crash. Noticing his car was on fire, they pulled him out onto the ground.

As the fire grew, Saucier grabbed the man by the armpits and dragged him to a safe place. Seconds later, the entire car was engulfed in flames. Then, Casarez, a former nurse, used a wrench to stabilize a broken bone in his hand.

The Dorr Township Fire Department responded to the scene, including Chief Gary Fordham.

Upon arriving on the scene, he said, "the car was fully involved, not knowing at that point if someone's in the car or not."

He learned someone had pulled a man out of his car, and later, that it was two perfect strangers.

"Not everybody would do what they did," said Fordham.

The chief wanted to properly thank the people who stepped in, but never got to meet them on the scene. His department posted on Facebook looking for the ladies and it blew up. Tuesday, the three had the chance to meet. It was emotional for all three.

"They're the heroes of the night," said Chief Fordham.

The couple is hoping the man they helped or his family see this story and reach out so they can be reassured he's doing okay.

The chief also said the two women will receive life saving awards from the department.
