KENTWOOD, Mich — Calling all West Michigan LEGO fans! Get ready to have your blocks blown off.
The first location on the west side of the state was just announced. The store will open inside Woodland Mall in Kentwood this summer.
It's big news for fans of LEGO. The next closest locations are in Chicago or Detroit.
Founded in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, a carpenter, LEGO is now in the hands of one of his grandchildren. The name comes from an abbreviation of the two Danish words “leg godt,” meaning “play well."
Today, there are over 900 LEGO stores and amusement parks worldwide and the building bricks have been named "Toy of the Century" twice.
Just as all LEGO store locations, the one in Woodland Mall will sell sets, have areas to play with the bricks freely, towers to build your own minifigs and pick-and-build walls for selecting your own assortment of bricks.
No exact opening date has been announced yet. Mall officials say more information will be available soon.
To hold LEGO fans over until its grand opening, you can visit two locally-owned resale shops in the area. Bricks & Minifigs is on Breton Road and DNA Brix is on McKendrick Street in Grand Rapids.
