Ford Airport event gives warm welcome to service members, veterans

Groups lined the concourse exits of the airport to greet the service members and thank them for their service.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — For the eighth year, active military members and veterans were given a warm welcome home to West Michigan through a gathering at Ford International Airport.

The event kicked off Wednesday morning. Groups lined the concourse exits of the airport to greet the service members and thank them for their service.

"We get all kinds of responses. Some people when they're coming in, and we ask if they're a veteran, their spouse will say him, because he doesn't want the recognition or she doesn't want the recognition," said Phil Pakiela, captain of the Patriot Guard Riders of West Michigan. "Other people are just surprised. Some of them are shocked. We've had people say, it's the first time I've ever been welcomed home."

The daylong event was started by the Patriot Guard Riders, who were inspired after Vietnam veterans did not receive a welcome home. Groups like the Blue Star Mothers were also at the airport.

Attendees are encouraged to wave American flags, offer words of thanks and encouragement and sing patriot songs.

“Each year it is an honor to greet veterans and active military and see the expressions on their faces,” said Pakiela. “We invite the community to join us for Operation Handshake to thank the brave individuals who fight for our freedom.”

Loved ones of military members or veterans traveling through Ford Airport on Nov. 22 are encouraged to send flight information to Patriot Guard Riders to make sure they're celebrated. You can contact Phil Pakiela via email at papapakiela@gmail.com or by phone at 616-916-3064.
