GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A former Grand Rapids retirement home is being redeveloped as temporary housing for those in the unhoused community.
The Van Andel Pavilion at Fulton Manor retirement home will be refurbished to include 40 small apartments for those in need. Each apartment will include a kitchenette, bathroom and living and sleeping quarters.
The home will be called the Nexus Initiative.
The building was purchased by property management and investment firm Eenhoorn LLC, which is partnering with nonprofit Community Rebuilders.
Community Rebuilders, which will operate the new home, works to house those in need in Grand Rapids and help people avoid homelessness.
The home will be available for people working to find permanent housing. There will also be facilities in the building to connect residents to support services.
“Community Rebuilders recognizes the urgent need for innovative approaches to stable housing options for those experiencing homelessness,” said Vera Beech, executive director of Community Rebuilders. “The Nexus Initiative is a reflection of our dedication to not only meet immediate housing needs, but also to foster long-term stability and well-being.”
The former retirement home was selected for this project due to its size. Eenhoorn officials also say refurbishing an existing building coincides with their sustainability goals.
The project is slated to begin in March and open to residents this fall. It will be located at 1450 E Fulton Street.
