KENT COUNTY, Mich. — 79-year-old Harold James Mast passed away on Dec. 20.
Harold served as a Kent County commissioner for 20 years, served on the City of Kentwood Council for 14 years, was appointed by former Governor Rick Snyder on the Commission on Services to the Aging and was the first West Michigan resident to serve as Chairman according to a Facebook Post from Kent County, Michigan.
The post read: "It is with heavy hearts that we share that former Commissioner Harold Mast recently passed away. A distinguished veteran and unwavering champion for veterans' and senior issues, Commissioner Mast served our community with dedication."
Mast was born on Feb. 8, 1944 in Volga, South Dakota according to his obituary.
His obituary says Harold was a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He leaves behind his wife Angie and his children Chris (Kim) Mast, Keri (Brandon) Hultink, Jacki Mast and Erick Mast. He is also survived by ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Harold's obituary states that he was admired for "his accomplishments and his loyalty to his family and friends. He lived a selfless life, always putting others before himself. His honor, courage, and integrity were qualities that defined him."
Harold spent time serving as a Captain in the Navy, his obituary says he was proud of his time in the military and that he "dedicated himself to serving his country as well as upholding the values of the Armed Forces."
Harold was a member of Hillside Community Church, his faith was also important to him.

Visitations for Harold were held on Dec. 26 from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. as well as Dec. 27 from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. followed by an Honor Guard Ceremony and memorial service.
