GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — People who tuned into 97.9 WGRD on Thursday may have noticed a difference from the usual programming. The cast of the Free Beer and Hot Wings Show - Gregg “Free Beer” Daniels, Chris “Hot Wings” Michels, Steve, Kelly, and Maitlynn - took over the air waves for the "Fill The Basket" radiothon.

Throughout the radiothon there were no commercials, less music and stories from people across West Michigan who have been impacted in some way by Kids' Food Basket. This was the first time they held this radiothon, it's an idea that's been in the making for more than four years.

The goal? "To benefit Kids' Food Basket's mission to nourish West Michigan kids to reach their full potential," according to a release from WGRD. The radiothon raised nearly $130,000 for Kids' Food Basket during their radiothon on Thursday.

The show set out with the goal of raising $37,000. They surpassed that goal more than three times over, raising $129,942. The original goal of $37,000 is enough to enroll one school in Kid's Food Basket's sack supper program.

“The generosity we got to witness from all of West Michigan on behalf of the kids of West Michigan through Kids' Food Basket is one of the most amazing things we have ever witnessed or been able to part of.  We are lucky to live and work in such a wonderful, amazing community," said Gregg “Free Beer” Daniels from the Free Beer & Hot Wings Show.

Every weekday, Kids' Food Basket distributes more than 10,000 healthy meals to kids in Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa and Allegan counties. If you would like to donate to Kids' Food Basket you can do so by clicking here.
