Little Free Pantry opens in Walker, donations now accepted

City officials are asking people to donate non-expired, non-perishable food items, as well as toiletries and personal hygiene items.

WALKER, Mich. — The City of Walker is celebrating the start of its new Little Free Food Pantry, and donations are now being accepted.

City officials are asking people to donate non-expired, non-perishable food items, as well as toiletries and personal hygiene items.

The pantry is currently a cabinet inside the lobby of the Walker Ice and Fitness Center on Remembrance Road NW. Anyone needing help or wanting to donate can take advantage of the pantry seven days a week.

Nicole DiDonato, communications manager with the City of Walker, said the pantry was started after residents expressed interest in donating.

"We're having people approach our commissioners, the mayor, even police department throughout the year, what they can do to give back for folks," she said. "So we thought that by adding this Little Free Pantry, it could be a way for us to have year-round assistance for folks who may want to drop things off or if they need a little something."

DiDonato said they're keeping the pantry small and simple for now.

"Right now, it's a cabinet...As people are coming into workout, maybe as you're passing City Hall and whatnot, feel free to come on and drop things off," DiDonato said. "If there's something you need, you can go ahead and take as well. And again, we'll just kind of evaluate about how quickly it grows or the need and it may even grow to something bigger to come."

The pantry is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the week, and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the weekend. To learn more, click here.
