GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A popular Creston ice cream shop officially opened up for the season on Tuesday. Frosty Boy started serving ice cream at 2 p.m. with precautions in place because of the boil water advisory.
The shop said they spoke with their health inspector and the health department to come up with the safest way for them to open.
While the advisory remains in effect the shop said hard serve ice cream will be unavailable because they need running water for the scoopers.
They are also unable to serve "Slushes," "Freezes" and "Glaciers" to start the season.
Employees are taking a number of safety measures including washing, rinsing and sanitizing equipment and surfaces with jugs of purified water.
"It has been different, but we are doing what we can to ensure the safety of our customers and our staff," the shop said.
Some customers were happy to see the shop open despite the advisory because the advisory left them looking for something to do.
A group of students from Grand Rapids Public Schools were at the shop enjoying some ice cream while school was closed due to the advisory.
The students said they visit the shop often since they go to school across the street. With classes being canceled Tuesday it just gave them more time to enjoy one of their favorite spots.
Grand Rapids Public Schools will resume classes Wednesday after the city's first round of testing the water came back clear.
The boil advisory will remain in effect until a second round of testing comes back clear as well.
