Funeral arrangements set for Michigan State Trooper who was killed during traffic stop

MSP Trooper Joel Popp, 39, is survived by his wife Stefanie and daughter Emalyn.

SAGINAW COUNTY, Mich. — Funeral arrangements are set for the Michigan State Police Trooper who was hit and killed during a traffic stop last week.

The funeral service for MSP Trooper Joel Popp will take place at the SVSU Ryder Center located at 7400 Bay Rd., University Center on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 11 a.m. A private committal service will follow the funeral.

Visitations will take place at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Monday, Jan. 29 and Tuesday, Jan. 30 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. A visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the SVSU Ryder Center on Wednesday.

Popp was 39 years old and is survived by his wife Stefanie and daughter Emalyn. His obituary says "he was an avid outdoorsman and loved being a dad."

Popp was conducting a traffic stop outside his vehicle on I-75 North near Birch Run Road around 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 24 when a driver hit two patrol cars and Popp.

Popp was taken to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Popp served with the Michigan State Police since 2020.

A GoFundMe to support the family has nearly reached its goal of $60,000.
