COMSTOCK PARK, Mich — They say Labor Day is the “Unofficial End to Summer.” Before you know it, many Michiganders will be packing away their shorts and dusting off their flannels while finishing the last of their lemonade to make room for fresh apple cider.
And as fall nears, experts from Schaafsma Heating & Cooling told 13 ON YOUR SIDE that a routine check of your heating system should be on your to-do list as well.
“Right now is perfect to start thinking about getting your fall heating tune up to make sure that your equipment is ready to go for the winter. If there are any issues you want to do it before it hits that first 20-degree day, and before we have snow. That way you know you're good to go for the winter and aren’t going to be set up for any issues,” said Chris Gessner who serves as Schaafsma's general manager.
The company says it might be time for that fall tune-up if you’re noticing any of the following things:
- A sudden increase in your electrical bills
- Constant thermostat adjustment with little change
- Loud noises or foul odors
- Minimal airflow from your vents
- Owning a heating system that is more than 10 years old
- It’s been more than one year since your last maintenance
During their fall tune-ups, Schaafsma employees say they do a combustion analysis and check your gas pressure, flame sensors and your hot surface igniter among other things.
“This time of year is also a great time to kind of put that AC to bed and make sure it gets its proper shutdown,” said Schaafsma service manager David Buren.
