GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A greater Grand Rapids family is having to stay elsewhere after an evening housefire started in the garage.
The Grand Rapids Township Fire Department said they first got calls from a concerned neighbor around 8:45 p.m. on July 4.
No one was home, but when firefighters made it to the house in the 3700 block of Upper Lake Court Drive, the garage was fully involved with flames.
Crews immediately found a nearby fire hydrant and put a stop to the flames.
The Plainfield Fire Department, Ada Fire Department and the Cannon Township Fire Department also responded to help out.
"We were we were on it pretty quick. We got water on it right away. Our response time from the station to there was about 4 minutes. We were able to get a bulk, big chunk of the fire taken out and the garage, I'm sure is a loss, but no fire got into the home," said Lt. David Van Slooten of the Grand Rapids Township Fire Department.
While the fire was extinguished in the garage, there was damage to the home. The owners cannot stay there.
At this point, fire investigators aren't sure yet what caused the flames.
