PAW PAW, Mich. — Michigan State Police want to make it easier for you to safely store your firearms.
Troopers from the Paw Paw post worked with Bronson Trauma Injury Prevention Services and Borgess Trauma Injury Prevention Services to buy several hundred pistol safes that they'll hand out to gun owners in Kalamazoo and Van Buren counties.
“Safely storing your firearms is one of the most important things you can do as a responsible gun owner,” said F/Lt. Scott Ernstes, commander of the Paw Paw Post. “Securing your firearms is critical in reducing the risk of gun-related injuries and deaths. This is a reminder to take the necessary steps to keep your loved ones and your household safe."
To get a voucher, head to the Paw Paw Post at 43255 60th Ave in Paw Paw Twp between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. during the weekday.
Organizers will hand out one safe per household for gun owners in Kalamazoo and Van Buren County.
Michigan State Police said they supplied safes to Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) certified CPL instructions in Kalamazoo and Van Buren Counties to hand to those taking CPL training.
Gun retailers in the area were also given vouchers to give customers who buy new handguns.
The post will also have a limited supply of free gun locks for rifles.
MSP said the goal is to help make homes safer by promoting proper gun storage methods through education on the new safe storage laws and by making gun locks and safes more accessible.
