Grand Haven lighthouse getting a facelift, won't impact your summer walks on the pier

The concrete base of the outer lighthouse will be repaired after years of weather damage.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — The lighthouse at the end of the Grand Haven pier is getting an update this summer in a project that's set to last for a few months.

"The Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy has really been leading a charge to invest in our iconic piers and our lighthouse," says Dana Kollewehr, Special Events and Projects Manager for the City of Grand Haven.

This summer, the concrete base of the lighthouse is up for restoration after years of wear and tear.

"It has to have been many, many decades," says Kollewehr.

Crews will be out all summer repairing damage to the base. You'll see them bringing materials to the end of the pier daily, and are asked to do your best to stay out of their way.

"There will be barricades that are up and some fencing," says Kollewehr. "We do ask that the public refrains from passing those barricades to go and enjoy the outer lighthouse."

Those barricades are only at the end of the pier, meaning you can still walk nearly its entire length.

"We have all of these wonderful assets that the community enjoys, and certainly visitors enjoy as well," says Kollewehr. "And we want to continue to keep them up."

The project in total will cost more than $210,000, with $60,000 of that total funded by a grant from the state's Lighthouse Assistance Program.

It's expected to wrap up no later than Aug. 21, but the city says it could finish sooner if the weather and other factors cooperate.
