Visit Grand Haven's 'Bones About Town' this October — If you dare

"Whether they make you shriek or laugh, Bones About Town is designed to lure new and returning souls to Grand Haven during the darkest, quietest time of year."

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — Walking the streets of Downtown Grand Haven in the summer you'll pass by many faces as locals and tourists flood the lakeshore city. While the city becomes a bit of a ghost town in the off-season, they've found a way to fill the streets with faces once again — faces of the unalive variety.

The streets of the City of Grand Haven have been overrun with over 150 five-foot-tall skeletons, decorated by local businesses for a skeleton-decorating competition.

"I'm so excited for Bones About Town this year. Last year was our first year and it was amazing! I was thrilled to win Scariest Bones last year. Must Love Dogs has a title to defend, but there are many wonderful, creative  displays that I would still be delighted to have just participated in." Tonya Christiansen, Owner, of Must Love Dogs Boutique.

The bones will be "about town" from Oct. 1 to Oct. 31. To cast your vote, all you'll need to do is enter a participating business with a voting booth inside — if you dare. You can also cast your votes online here.

The competition will end in the city's Fall Festival on Oct. 26. The festival kicks off in the morning with spooky stories and a costume contest before the winners of "Bones About Town" are announced. There will also be trick or treating downtown, and festivalgoers can stop by the Tri-Cities Museum for a "Haunted Museum" tour.

The city welcomes locals and visitors to come roam the "haunted" streets and vote for their favorite skeletons.

"Whether they make you shriek or laugh, Bones About Town is designed to lure new and returning souls to Grand Haven during the darkest, quietest time of year," said event planners.

For all the hair-raising details, you can visit the Bones About Town Facebook Event Page.

And while you wait for the festival, enjoy some skeleton jokes!

  • Why didn’t the skeleton laugh at the joke? Because he didn’t have a funny bone.
  • What did the doctor say to the skeleton who had a temperature of 103 degrees? “Looks like you are running a femur.”
  • What is half the diameter of a skeletal circle? The radius.
  • What is a skeleton’s favorite thing to do with their cell phone? Take skelfies.
  • What do you call a lie told by a skeleton? A fibula.
  • What type of art do skeletons like? Skulltures!
  • What kind of pasta do skeletons enjoy eating the most? Elbow macaroni.
