GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — If you've ever wondered what goes into a Grand Haven Musical Fountain show, now is your chance to not only see behind the scenes but even get your own choreographed show into next summers lineup.
Brad Boyink spends a lot of time at his computer. Working his magic to turn this screen into this musical fountain show.
"It's incredibly rewarding to see your work on the musical fountain," says Boyink.
He's created hundreds of shows since he began choreographing them in 1985 following the footsteps of his grandfather, who helped build the fountain.
"He also did all the original music, and about three quarters of the original shows," says Boyink.
Now, he wants to teach you how to choreograph shows as well.
The fountain will introduce 50 new songs to its rotation this year, with each 30 minute show taking nearly 30 hours to put together in a software Boyink helped create. That software allows you to match the beat from each song to different water formations and colored lights.
Anyone interested can become a choreographer, with no experience required. Boyink will hold classes to get you up to speed before letting your imagination flow.
"I find this to be a really rewarding experience for people looking to see the impact they can make on the community in a really creative way," says Nicki Bonczyk, social media manager for the Musical Fountains.
And putting your own magic on display for guests to see all summer long.
"It's just real gratifying to see them seeking out the fountain, and see how they react to the beauty that it represents when they see the show for the first time," says Jerry Troke, chair of the Grand Haven Musical Fountain Committee.
