GRAND HAVEN, Mich. - Workers are putting the finishing touches on the Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium in Grand Haven. The more than $3 million project started in the fall of 2017. It's set to open with a ribbon-cutting event at noon on Thursday, June 21.
"It's a park-like setting where the water meets the land," said Steve Loftis, Waterfront Stadium Redevelopment Chair.
Before next week workers need to finish the lighting on the amphitheater and complete an adjacent parking lot and side walk.
Community members and city leaders have been dreaming about a new gathering space for the waterfront for many years. That dream is about to come true.
"This is a very special place not only to Grand Haven and the Tri-cities, but West Michigan in general" Loftis said.
The stadium's new design includes tiered grass seating, a concession stand and a volleyball playing surface.
"There's something in it for everyone," Loftis said. "And that was the idea."
Much of the work was paid for with charitable donations from community members, businesses and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund.
The largest donation was a gift from Lynne Sherwood's estate.
