GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (Grand Haven Tribune) - Orange fencing surrounds the Imagination Station at Grand Haven’s Mulligan’s Hollow as the structure’s removal looms.
The nearly 30-year-old wooden structure will soon be removed in preparation for the new play space that volunteers will construct Oct. 9-14.
While official dates are subject to change, the space will be filled with activity in the coming weeks.
An excavating company has volunteered to remove the structure and underlying foundation, which is slated to happen in the coming days, said Derek Gajdos, co-chairperson of the tools committee for the Reimagine Project.
Once the site is cleared, another excavating company is slated to remove the stone, bring in sand and grade the site. Volunteers from the Board of Light & Power will also dig holes for posts, Gajdos said.
During the week of Sept. 17, a cement slab is scheduled to be poured to support the rubber base.
As of now, the last week in September is open so work can be completed if it wasn’t done according to the original schedule.
Materials for October’s “Build Week” are expected to arrive early next month.
Tool donations sought for “Build Week” include circular saws, power miter saws, step ladders, electrical extension cords and more. A full list of needed tool donations can be found online at www.gh-reimagine.org/volunteers.
Gajdos said his children enjoyed playing on the original structure and he looks forward to the next generation having the opportunity on the new play space.
Gajdos said it was an “amazing feat” that the community raised the money for the project and volunteers will come together next month to build it.
‘It will be an amazing community wide event,” he said.
