Grand Rapids Beer Trolley closes after 5 years

Starting rides in 2017, Grand Rapids Beer Trolley has closed, citing Michigan's new insurance policies.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A popular attraction that doubled as a transportation service in Grand Rapids has closed its doors and parked for good.

Posting an emotional video online, owner Austin Dingledine said that this was not the ending they foresaw, but are happy to have been a part of so many memories for the people in the city.

Beginning rides in 2017, the Grand Rapids Beer Trolley was a way for people to tour Downtown Grand Rapids and ride between the city's breweries and distilleries. They were known for hosting parties, weddings and celebrations, which Dingledine says he is proud to have been a part of. He says after the past few months they were not able to find a solution to keep rides going.

"There were several changes at the state level back in 2019, with the Michigan No Fault that made it really tough for smaller transportation businesses like us to find feasible insurance products that made sense, from a cost standpoint. We just want to say thank you to all of our wonderful customers we've had over the years. And just so happy that we could have been a part of this community, this city."

Those with outstanding bookings have been contacted and issued full refunds for their deposits, while being referred to other businesses.

Dingledine thanked his family and friends for their support in the video. His father was also the driver, who he says had a wonderful time putting their idea into action. He hopes the trolley will create more memories and experiences as it did in Grand Rapids.

"We've been able to learn and grow as a family business, which is one of our first kind of endeavors together, that you guys were a part of. So thank you so much for the support," he said.
