CAUGHT ON CAMERA: Grand Rapids resident captures video of wrong-way driver on I-196

So far, no arrests have been made in connection to the incident.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A Grand Rapids resident captured the moment a driver drove the wrong way on a major highway in the city.

Robert Vansuilichem was getting ready for the week on Sunday when he noticed the driver driving the wrong way on I-196 before the exit ramp onto US-131.

"My reaction was just pure shock because he wasn't stopping right away. I was planning my week at work and getting ready for the Lions to beat the Rams, and I just happened to look out the window, and sure enough, I saw a truck coming up the wrong way on the ramp, and I just grabbed my phone, started videotaping," said Vansuilichem.

The video shows the driver driving the wrong way before almost hitting another vehicle, then turning around, slowing and almost hitting other vehicles before driving away.

This incident comes almost a year after new wrong-way detection systems were placed on parts of US-131. The new systems were put in place after officials saw a 34% increase in fatal wrong-way driving accidents from 2015 to 2018.

Despite the new systems, Vansuilichem said he still sees accidents quite often.

"Almost daily, I see at least a fender bender. I've seen some really bad ones, but I would say two, three times a week, at minimal, I see something like that go on,” said Vansuilichem.

Which is why he said he is asking others to take more precautions on the road.

So far, Michigan State Police said that no arrests have been made in connection to the incident.
