Grand Rapids businesses get together to surprise beloved crossing guard

Jenna Arcidiacono said she would drive by and see 70-year-old Brenda Dobbs smiling and waving, she was so inspired she had to do something to give back to her.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — On an average day in Grand Rapids you can head to the intersection of Leonard and Alpine and you might find a crossing guard the community knows and loves.

Jenna Arcidiacono, chef and owner at Cafe Amore, said she would drive by and see 70-year-old Brenda Dobbs smiling and waving.

Morning and at 3:15 p.m. she's out there helping the kids cross the street, Arcidiacono said Dobbs knows all the kids names.

Arcidiacono was so inspired by Dobbs' joy, she decided to do something to give back to her.

She put a call out on social media and she said a bunch of other local businesses wanted to pitch in and offer up something from their business.

"We gave her cookies from Joy of Sprinkles and a $100 gift card to Meijer, flowers, candles, Sobie Meat donated a bag of goodies, Chris Andrus brought a pizza from the kitten, One Way Coffee brought drinks," Arcidiacono said. "We got some awesome stuff. Literally tears in her eyes."
