GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Riverwalk between the JW Marriot and the Blue Bridge is getting a complete makeover.
The Riverwalk in that area has been closed for several years due to safety concerns from flooding over the last decade.
In addition to the work being done to make the Riverwalk accessible once again, the project will include places for people to sit and rest while taking in the beauty of the surrounding area, as well as upgraded lighting.
"To ensure that this is not a walkway in a place that is closed with future flooding that that occurs we're building in natural components that will help manage that floodwater in newer and more sustainable way is so that this area does not get inundated or impacted by those floodwaters moving forward," said Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Director David Marqardt.
"The city is getting ready for the bidding process and hopes to have construction start on the nearly two million dollar project in August or September," added Marqardt.
