GRPD honors fallen officers

The ceremony paid tribute to 32 officer who died serving the city of Grand Rapids.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Police officers killed in the line of duty were honored Thursday afternoon at Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. 

Local law enforcement officers, family members of the fallen and community leaders all paid tribute to 32 officers who died while serving the city. 

Muskegon Regional Police Pipes and Drums played bagpipes at the service and all the names of the officers who died were read aloud. 

The most recent officer for the GRPD to die in the line of duty was officer Robert Anthony Kozminski, who was killed on Sunday, July 8, 2007. Detective George Powers was the first officer killed in Grand Rapids. He died Thursday, Aug. 22, 1895.

According to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund a total of 1,582 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty during the past 10 years, an average of one death every 55 hours or 158 per year.
