GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - If you see a heavy police presence on Medical Mile on Wednesday night, June 13, don't be concerned. The Grand Rapids Police Department will be lighting up the city with their squad cars as a part of the Light Up the Night event.
In partnership with Helen DeVos Children's Hospital, Silent Observer and other first responders, they will be lining the street near the hospital and turning on all their lights at 8:30 p.m. The kids in the hospital will have flashlights and they will flash their lights back.
GRPD said in a Facebook post, "We want to show all the children we stand with them as they battle their own illnesses." The light show will only last three minutes.
The public is also invited to participate by finding a safe place to stand or park near the hospital and use flashlights to shine at the kids. DeVos Children's Hospital says that if you can see their building, then the kids can see you.
This is going to the first of three Light Up the Night events happening over the summer. GRPD will be out there once on month on July 11 and August 8.
