GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins visited Grand Rapids Friday.
He was the keynote speaker at the West Michigan Sports Commission's annual luncheon.
Cousins is set to begin his third season as backup to Robert Griffin III and he's learning a new system under new head coach Jay Gruden -- but he will experience something familiar this year.
He'll get his old number 8 back.
He says he came up with some "creative negotiating" with receiver Andre Roberts to make it happen.
"Because it was my college number it made sense, but I said, 'Traditionally, guys do pay a small fee to change numbers, let's talk business.' He offered, and I said, 'How about we do this, I have a football camp in my hometown, how about you donate to the football camp, we'll do it for charity. That way, you can have the number you want, I get the number that I used to wear, and the football camp gets some extra help -- so everybody wins.'"
Cousins played quarterback at Holland Christian and Michigan State University.
