Police identify body recovered from Grand River as missing Grand Rapids man

Grand Rapids police have identified the body recovered from the Grand River on Friday, as Jamel Parker, the man reported missing since mid February.

Grand Rapids police have identified the body recovered from the Grand River on Friday, as Jamel Parker, the man reported missing since mid February.

Police are stopping short of calling Parker's death a homicide. They say until the autopsy report comes back with a cause of death, they do not know if there was any foul play involved.

"Right now we are awaiting autopsy results that will lead us further into the investigation," said Sgt. Terry Dixon with the Grand Rapids Police Department. "Until we have confirmation this remains a death investigation so any allegations or discussion that this is a murder is not true."

In a news release from the Grand Rapids Police Department, police say the cause of his death remains under investigation.

Parker, 31, last was seen running away during the early morning hours of Sunday, Feb. 12, near Broadway Avenue and Webster Street NW. The following day, police were told of a shoe found by the Grand River near Ann Street -- police haven't yet said whether the shoe belonged to Parker.

Police helicopters and boats were dispatched in an effort to locate him to no avail.

The Kent County dive team pulled Parker's body from the river Friday, March 24.

Parker's family earlier offered a $5,000 for any information leading to his whereabouts, later increasing the amount to help garner additional tips.
