GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — On Thursday morning, water poured into Mary Thompson's home following the water main break at the intersection of Adams Street SE. and Philadelphia Avenue SE in Grand Rapids.
"The water just poured and poured and poured into our basement, and the water was rising so fast that we were afraid that it was going to come all the way upstairs and destroy other property that we have," said Thompson.
The water main break impacting Mary and her husband, happened just one day before another water main broke on on Friday Morning near Kalamazoo Avenue.
"It was a mess, and it is a mess, and so we're just hoping that city does their job."
While Friday's water main break was on a smaller scale and didn't prompt a boil water advisory like Thursday's issue, Thompson said she hopes the city will look into its infrastructure.
"My suggestion would be, you know this is going to happen. This is not the first time this has happened. You should have a plan in place so that the community doesn't have to wait or worry about having their house disrupted like this. This is not acceptable. We pay taxes and stuff."
And while she said they have adjusters on the way next week from her insurance company and the city, she hopes her family won't be stuck with a hefty cleanup bill.
"This is not anything that happened because we did it," said Thompson. "This is something that happened on their watch, with their equipment. And so hopefully they're going to do the right thing."
