GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Congratulations are in order for the Grand Rapids Fire Department!
GRFD is the first in the state of Michigan to achieve Insurance Services Office Class 1 rating, meaning they are quick to respond to community needs, risk mitigation at the highest possible standard and have strong commitment to preserve life, property and the environment.
Class 1 rating is one of the factors used to determine fire insurance premiums for homeowners and businesses. Fire insurance premiums are based on the quality of service and fire protection are available. All this means that Grand Rapids property owners could get the lowest premiums possible in that area of insurance.
According to city officials, this world-class rating is the result of the city's Water, Emergency Communications and Fire Departments' commitment to continuous improvement, overall efficiency in execution and response of emergency service.
On Monday, Dec. 10, community leaders -- including Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, City Commissioners, City Manager Mark Washington, Fire Chief John Lehman, Fire Department personnel, State Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer and various other business owners and community members -- gathered at GRFD's headquarters at 38 La Grave Ave. SE to announce and celebrate the achievement.
