GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Multiple homes were damaged in an early morning house fire in Grand Rapids on Monday.
The fire started at a home on Adams Street near Eastern Avenue around 4:15 a.m. The flames spread to a neighboring home, where they were contained in the attic. Battalion Chief Mark Noorman said the home where the fire initially started is considered a total loss.
No people or animals were inside the homes at the time of the fire, according to authorities.
It is unclear what caused the fire. Crews are now working to investigate.
When first responders arrived at the scene, two power lines and a communication line were down. Consumers Energy workers repaired the wires by 6:30 a.m.
Neighbor Jamall Chandler said he woke up to the house being red and yellow, and when he opened the door, he saw big flames coming from that house.
"It is a miracle nobody was hurt, it's a blessing nobody was hurt," Chandler said. "I'm just glad to hear it because it's kids that live there. I'm glad they weren't there."
