GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A new, five-story apartment building with commercial retail space could be coming soon to the northeast side of Grand Rapids after city commissioners approved a rezoning ordinance on Tuesday afternoon.

City commissioners voted unanimously in favor of the rezoning approval. They hope the courtyard-style apartment building will bring more than 180 units and 622 square feet of commercial retail space to a 3.4-acre property on Leonard Street NE between Lafayette and North avenues.

The proposal calls for 86 studio units that will be 400 square feet each, 91 one-bedroom units between 520 and 650 square feet each, and four two-bedroom units that will be 900 square feet each. Second ward commissioner Lisa Knight said the project will bring much-needed housing to the area, and that she's excited about it.

The property is currently home to Sun Title's offices and a commercial kitchen for the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids, both of which will remain.
