GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Police say the death of a woman in a house fire has been ruled a homicide, and her husband, who is in critical condition, is considered a suspect.
On Monday, March 9, around 6 a.m. the Grand Rapids Fire Department responded to a home on Jennette Avenue NW near 9th Street. Police said a married couple, Steven Scott Field, 54, of Wyoming and Christina Marie Field, 49, of Grand Rapids were inside the home.
Court records indicate the couple has been separated since April 2019.
Steven had been living with family in Wyoming and Christina was renting the Jennette Avenue home, according to court records.
Christina died at the scene. Steven was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Tuesday evening, police said. Due to the severity of his condition, police have not been able to interview him, but he is being considered a suspect in his wife's death.
An autopsy performed Tuesday determined Christina's death was a homicide, but police are not releasing her cause of death.
Late last month, Christina filed for divorce from her husband; the two had been married since 2001. Christina said her husband had stalked her at work, threatened her and hacked into her social media accounts, where he posted lewd remarks on her behalf, according to court records.
Christina filed for a restraining order to keep Steven away from her workplace and her home, with the exception of when he would be picking up the couple's two teenage children. A hearing on that request was set for Friday, March 13.
Steven served five years in prison in the 1990s for attempted kidnapping, felonious assault and a weapons offense.
Detectives and fire investigators are still working on this case, and if anyone has information related to the investigation they can contact the Grand Rapids Police Department at 616-456-3400 or Silent Observer at 616-774-2345.
This is the second deadly fire in Grand Rapids in a month. At the beginning of February, a mother and her three sons died in a house fire on the southeast side of the city.
Family members have started a GoFundMe for the couple's two children, who lost most of their belongings in the fire.
