Man surrenders peacefully after 4-hour barricade situation in Grand Rapids

Police say the victim had a personal protection order against the suspect, identified as a 37-year-old man. Officers had responded to the home earlier that day.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A man is in custody after allegedly holding a woman at knifepoint and barricading himself inside a Grand Rapids home.

The incident happened Wednesday evening in the 3300 block of Poinsettia Avenue.

The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) said it started as a domestic incident. Officers responded around 5:40 p.m. to a report of someone being held at knifepoint.

Shortly after they arrived, a woman and a 2-year-old were able to get out of the home safely. Neither were injured.

The suspect, identified as a 37-year-old man, then allegedly barricaded himself inside the home. Officers worked to negotiate with the man but did not receive a response.

Eventually, officers entered the home and the man surrendered without incident around 9:30 p.m.

No one was injured.

Police say the victim in the incident had a personal protection order taken out against the suspect, who is her ex-boyfriend, prior to Wednesday.

Officers had been called to the same home earlier that morning, around 2:30 a.m., when the woman said the man violated that personal protection order. Police say he left the scene before officers arrived.

Officers had also been called to the home multiple times in the past to address incidents involving the same suspect, according to police.

"We are very happy that this incident ended without harm or any type of injury to anyone," said Capt. Terry Dixon with GRPD.
