GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — An investigation is underway after a man was shot by two Grand Rapids Police officers Saturday morning.

According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, officers responded to the 200 block of Union Avenue NE around 8:30 a.m. for a "trouble with a person" call. Officers said they found the suspect in the 600 block of Innes Street NE.

Officers said when they arrived at the scene the suspect, a 19-year-old man, was acting "erratically" and produced an edged weapon, charging at the officers.

The two police officers then fired their weapons at the suspect, hitting him multiple times, police said.

According to police, medical aid was given to the suspect on scene by GRPD and East Grand Rapids Public Safety officers arriving to the scene. He was taken to a local hospital and is in surgery, police said.

The police officers were not injured but the two officers who shot the suspect have been placed on administrative leave, according to police.

Michigan State Police have taken over the investigation.

While the on-scene investigation is conducted, Union Avenue NE between Lyon Street and Crescent Street is expected to be closed.
