GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Police shared an update on the fatal shooting of a teenage girl.
Lakyijah Williams, 15, was shot and killed on May 18. Police Chief Eric Winstrom said it happened that Saturday night in downtown Grand Rapids. Williams was on Ottawa Avenue near Studio Park, hanging out with her friends.
Officials said they don't know what led up to the shooting or if Lakyijah was even the target. But they do know multiple shots were fired and she was shot from a distance.
On Monday, Chief Winstrom said he's asking the community to help them solve the case.
"Today I'm asking the whole city to stand up, do the right thing and help us," Winstrom said. "She was a daughter, she was a sister... She has a lot of people who love her. She deserves justice."
Detectives weren't ready to share if they have a suspect yet, but they did share a six-second surveillance video.
It showed five young people, who police said were all children, were within feet of Williams when she was killed.
"The way they're walking....they're children," Windstorm said "They were kids. And they were right there. They saw Lakyijah get killed. And we need to talk to them."
