GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The City of Grand Rapids shared a map of areas to avoid following a water main break early Thursday morning.
The water main break happened at the intersection of Adams Street SE and Philadelphia Avenue SE around 4 a.m.
Crews have been working to shut off the water, find the break and clean residue from the areas that were flooded by the break.
The city has shared a map of roads to avoid while the crews continue to work on the problem.
Water System Manager Wayne Jernberg said crews faced issues turning off the valves to the transmission main.
The break caused major flooding in the area. Some cars parked along Philadelphia Avenue SE were almost completely submerged. Jernberg also said some homes will have water in the basement.
The excess water was pumped out of the area after crews turned the water off Thursday morning.
Jernberg said impacted homes will be without water until repairs are complete now that the water is off. The repairs are estimated to take a day or two.
The impacted homes will then be placed under a boil water advisory due to the loss of service.
