Firefighters will spend at least part of Friday putting out the hot spots after a massive scrap metal fire.
It happened around midnight at PADNOS Iron and Metal's Turner Recycling Center on Turner Avenue between Ann Street and West River Drive. Initial reports indicate explosions could be heard near the scene.
Cranes could be seen being used to remove scrap metal from the pile. Meanwhile firefighters attacked the fire with water from three sides.
Walker's fire chief says one of the biggest challenges in fighting the fire was the weather. The wind shifted around four times.
The chief says at times the flames were 80 to 100 feet in the air. For that reason, the department's aerial unit played a pivotal role in fighting the flames.
Leaders from PADNOS say there were no toxic chemicals inside the pile, and because of that there is no danger of chemicals in the air.
Life Ambulance was called out to the scene, but first responders from that agency say no one was hurt.
