GRANDVILLE, Mich. — A Grandville man wants something to be done along a popular bike path to deter wrong-way drivers.
Avid cyclist and Grandville resident Kim Chrisman is riled up about the intersection where Indian Mounds Drive meets Market Avenue in Grand Rapids.
He told 13 ON YOUR SIDE Monday, “many people decide that because the highway might be slow, as it is now, they'll get off here and drive that way, wrong way down the bike path.”
From Market Avenue, only bikes or pedestrians are allowed enter, not cars. There are ‘do not enter’ signs on both sides of the road. Cars can enter from the opposite side of the trail off Wilson Ave, but can only drive in that direction.
Despite that setup however, Chrisman said he's been met by wrong-way drivers while biking multiple times. Several other people along the trail Monday said they’ve seen wrong-way drivers as well.
He said, "I have been known to let them know they're doing something incorrect, which yesterday a gentleman got out of his vehicle, threatened to cut me.”
He wants to see something done to improve the safety in the area like more signage or a barrier. He is so passionate about his concerns he brought them before the Grandville City Council Monday night.
“Somebody's going to get killed,” he said in front of the council.
A solution is complex because the path is split between several municipalities. Grandville city leaders did say at Monday’s meeting some sort of change is being talked about.
13 ON YOUR SIDE will stay on top of the issue and let you know if a solution is decided upon or work gets started to make a change.
