Grandville, MI (WZZM) - The number 11 jersey worn by Grandville High School hockey player Ryan Fischer now hangs above center ice at the Georgetown Ice Arena.

There was a little snag getting the curtain off at ceremonies Friday night, but once it's uncovered, everyone who enters the arena will see Fischer's jersey.

"He would be humbled and proud to see his banner hanging over center ice," Grandville athletic director Brian Parsons told the crowd during a ceremony before a game between Grandville and Grand Rapids Christian. "Ryan loved everything about Grandville High School, especially Bulldog hockey."

Fischer was the team captain when he died from an enlarged heart last March, just before the Bulldogs were to play in the state semi-finals.

Only 17, he was known as a great athlete, good student, humble and headed to the military academy to serve his country.

Coaches and classmates say hanging his jersey is a memorial to his legacy, and, they hope, an inspiration to future generations.

"This is something that will be symbolic for our players, both those who have known Ryan and those who will be coming forward," explained hockey coach Joel Breazeale.

"He will always be with us through thick and thin," adds close friend Troy Merriman. "Regardless of what happens, we always know we have him looking down on us."

There are no other jerseys hanging from the rafters in the Georgetown Ice Center. Just Ryan Fischer's.

"I am sure number 11 is watching over the Bulldog hockey team," says Parsons. Ryan's spirit will be with us forever."
