Great Giant Supermarket expands to meet customers needs

The store has expanded its meat and Hispanic dairy section.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Great Giant Supermarket has expanded its meat counter and Hispanic dairy section to include more options.

It's part of the store’s goal to create more access to food for those in need in the community.

Employees like Celestine Emmanuel live in the neighborhood and say they see how vital the store is.

“It's a neighborhood store. So, you have a lot of people who don't have cars, so it's convenient. They can just get a ride here, walk here and you know, walk back, you know," said Emmanuel.

Because many of their customers don't have access to transportation, head butcher Peter Habib says it's important that the store listens to the community's needs and answers them.

“We see the same faces here every single day and we want them to be able to come in here and get any kind of smoked item they want all the way up to Hispanic and a great state,” said Habib.

On Friday, the store is celebrating the expansion with a grand reopening with a ribbon cutting and discounts on items.

While they are excited for the strides they have already made in the community, they say they won't stop here.

“We feel very welcomed by the community and a lot of people are very happy that we're reinvesting into the store. We’ve got a great clientele base, and we want to continue to grow with the city," said store manager Delone Yelda.
