GREENVILLE, Mich. — A Greenville man died in the hospital days after being hit by a car, the Department of Public Safety says.

Brian Wellman, a 60-year-old Greenville man, was crossing North Lafayette Street near Grove Street around 11 p.m. when he was hit by a car. Investigators said later that Wellman was not in the crosswalk.

He was taken to a local hospital by ambulance, then transferred to a Grand Rapids hospital by AeroMed due to the severity of his injuries.

On Wednesday, police say that Wellman has died.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash, police say. The driver, 70-year-old Charles Weston Hatinger from Lakeview, was arrested on the scene.

Court documents say Hatinger had a preliminary breath test result of 0.9%. The legal blood alcohol concentration limit for driving is 0.08%.

Hatinger was arraigned on Tuesday afternoon. His charges have been upgraded following Wellman's death.

He now faces OWI causing death, which is a felony. The judge set his bond at $100,000 and he's due back in court next week.
