Ground breaks on $13.5 million Meijer Sports Complex expansion

The project will offer more fields and courts for neighbors around Rockford and West Michigan to use.

ROCKFORD, Mich. — It's a new era for the Meijer Sports Complex in Rockford.

Construction crews have already broken ground on the $13.5 million project that will offer more fields and courts for neighbors around Rockford and West Michigan to use.

The project has been in the works since the original complex was built in 2014.

"We needed infrastructure that will attract people into our destination but also serves as a community asset for locals to enjoy," said Mike Guswiler, president of the West Michigan Sports Commission. "We're looking at a $13.5 million campaign. So we're still just shy of that. We're still fundraising, but today was a day to mark, really the impact and the milestone that we've reached. So we're excited with it."

As of the day of the groundbreaking, the sports complex needs to raise another $500,000 to cover the full cost of construction.

Here's what the future holds for the complex:

  • 20 Pickleball Courts
  • Two baseball and softball diamonds
  • A new playground
  • 300 new parking spots

Part of the $13 Million in funding comes from a $3 million grant from the state of Michigan, $750,000 through federal funding and $1.5 Million from Alro Steel in Grand Rapids.

With all of the new additions, Detroit Tigers legend Lance Parrish said he's looking forward to the ribbon cutting once construction is over.

"It's a huge opportunity, not only for this community but all the kids that live in this community and elsewhere, they get to pass through and play on these amazing fields and at this amazing complex," said Parish.
