GRPD: Arrest made in city's first homicide of the year

Police arrested a 23-year-old in connection the shooting death of a 65-year-old woman earlier this month.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) has made an arrest in connection to the Jan. 3 shooting death of a 65-year-old woman. 

According to GRPD, 23-year-old Andre Dimetre Sims, of Grand Rapids, is currently in custody at the Kent County Correctional Facility. 

On Jan. 3, police were called to a home on Alpine Avenue NW were Sandra Carter was found shot. Carter was taken to the hospital where she died of her injuries. 

PREVIOUS: GRPD releases name of homicide victim

Detectives are expected to present the case to the Kent County Prosecutor's Office. GRPD said Sims faces the following charges:

  • Homicide – Open Murder
  • Felony Firearm
  • Habitual Offender

If convicted Sims faces life in prison, GRPD said. 

Carter's homicide is the first of 2021. Last year, Grand Rapids saw 38 homicides, making 2020 the deadliest year on record.
