GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Grand Rapids Public Schools is closed for the rest of the week due to heat, school officials say.
The closure begins Thursday, June 1 and ends Friday, June 2. The district's last day is scheduled for June 9.
In Grand Rapids, temperatures are expected to reach into the 90s through the week. Some GRPS schools do not have air conditioning.
“Our team monitored temperatures in GRPS buildings throughout the day Wednesday and some of them were simply too warm,” said GRPS Superintendent Leanne Roby. “That not only makes the learning environment a challenge, but it also raises a safety concern."
The closure includes all field trips and extracurriculars, but the district offices will remain open.
Here are some tips on how to stay cool ahead of the early June heat wave, according to the CDC:
- Stay in an air-conditioned indoor location as much as you can.
- Drink plenty of fluids even if you don’t feel thirsty.
- Schedule outdoor activities carefully.
- Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing and sunscreen.
- Pace yourself.
- Take cool showers or baths to cool down.
- Check on a friend or neighbor and have someone do the same for you.
- Never leave children or pets in cars.
- Check the local news for health and safety updates.
