Highland Park semi driver in hospital after falling asleep at wheel, crashing into another semi

A driver was able to escape out of the window after his semi caught on fire. Deputies said he suffered burns from the crash.

IONIA COUNTY, Mich. — A semi tractor/trailer driver is in the hospital after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing into another semi on Wednesday morning, according to the Ionia County Sheriff's Office. 

ICSO said around 9:10 a.m. deputies responded to a crash between two semi tractor/trailers, one of which was on fire. 

Deputies said the crash happened at westbound I-96 and Jordan Lake Road in Berlin Township. The westbound lanes were blocked off after the crash happened so crews could clear the scene.

ICSO said the investigation showed that a 50-year-old Highland Park man fell asleep behind the wheel of his semi, crashing into a semi driven by an Iowa man. 

The Highland Park man was able to escape the semi out of the driver's side window after it caught on fire. Deputies said he suffered burns from the crash. 

The Iowa man wasn't injured and was able to drive away from the scene, ICSO said. 

Deputies said the Highland Park man was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
