ALGER COUNTY, Mich. — A Holland man died while hiking in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Wednesday.
United States Park Rangers have identified the man as 45-year-old Steven Poppema.
“We extend our sincere condolences to the family of Steven Poppema,” said Park Superintendent David Horne, “and we thank our agency partners for their assistance in responding to this incident.”
On the evening of May 29, park rangers got a call that a man had fallen unconscious after showing signs of distress while hiking towards Spray Falls.
Park service rangers and the Alger County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) responded to the call. ACSO provided a marine response vessel while additional personnel responded on foot.
First responders pronounced Poppema dead at the scene. His body was recovered near the Coves Campground.
