Affordable housing project now complete in Ottawa County

The multiplex can house up to 4 families

HOLLAND, Mich. — An affordable housing project in Ottawa County is now complete.

Thursday, Jan. 10 a dedication was held for the multiplex in Holland Township. Four families will pay no more than 30 percent of their monthly income on total living expenses.

Good Samaritan Ministries partnered with Lakeshore Habitat for Humanity to try on the project.

"When we talk about 30 percent of the income we're talking about their total income but also their total housing costs being at 30 percent, so utilities, property taxes everything rent all included in that," says Don Wilkinson with Habitat.

Project leaders say they're aware that affordable housing is one of the most critical needs in West Michigan.

"I've seen so many times where the lack of affordable housing has impacted children and families that are struggling, working sometimes 2 or 3 jobs and just cannot make ends meet," says Linda Jacobs with Good Sam.

The groups say they are now looking at a new project that could house up to 40 families in Ottawa County.
