Gas leak sealed off in downtown Holland

No one was injured during the incident.

On Tuesday, a construction worker cut a gas line near 9th Street and Pine Avenue. City officials said that a four inch gas line was ruptured because of pipe work in the area.

The gas leak was reported around 1:45 p.m. It caused the pavement to be pushed up, and the intersection was shut down while crews worked to repair the leak.

Residents in the neighborhood near the gas leak were evacuated and roads were blocked off.

City officials were able to clamp the pipe around 3:15 p.m. and start fixing it. The area was reopened after air monitoring deemed it was safe for the public.

Holland Public Safety Captain Robert Buursma called the incident a "major inconvenience" but there is no danger to public now.

Tim Lubbers with SEMCO Energy said that the leak affected 83 overall customers. They were expected to be relighted on Tuesday evening.

No one was injured during the incident.
