HOLLAND, Mich. — West Michigan has had a reprieve from the summer heat as of late. However, in Holland, the "dog days" of summer are not over yet. On August 24, Windmill Island Gardens will see the return of Paws in the City and Mapleview Animal Hospital's Bark in the Park event.

Andrea Bork, the programs coordinator, said that after last year's inaugural event was such a success they brought it back.

"We're super excited, it was a big hit last year," said Bork. "What's new this year is we have almost double the vendors, which is awesome. So there's going to be so many more giveaways, prizes, games, businesses to interact with, people to meet."

From 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., dogs, dog owners and dog lovers can head on down to the park to celebrate these furry friends as well as take in the views and learn about the best places to take your pup.

The event will host over 25 booths set up by local animal hospitals, groomers, trainers, accessory crafters, treat bakeries, and more. There will even be a special guest, Abby Klingberg, a local dog trainer and national competitor. Klingberg will lead live dog agility demonstrations such as agility and flipping discs.

Bork said the event saw around 1,000 people and 300 dogs last year. She said this year they're hoping for even more with "double the fun."

And if you visit the event you won't be leaving empty-handed. Organizers say each attendee and their pup can pick up a welcome "doggy bag" full of goodies and surprises from event sponsors.

There's fun for the four-legged attendees as well. Attendees can test their pup’s agility skills, splash in some sprinklers, get a free caricature drawn, and even get a free frozen treat courtesy of the Holland Polar Patrol from 12:15 p.m. - 1 p.m.

The event will also have a local photographer in attendance so that attendees can get a free digital download professional portrait taken of their pup.

During the event the regular admission rates to the park will still be in effect. Admission will cost $12 for adults and $6 for children aged 3-15. Guests under the age of 3, all dogs and Holland residents with proof of residency enter the park free.

In addition to the fun activities, all park attractions will be open during the event as well. This includes the de Zwaan windmill, carousel, street organ and gift shop. However, dogs cannot enter the windmill or gift shop and must remain on leashes throughout the event.
