HOLLAND, Mich. - Tulip Time Festival officials announced Lisa Schulist and her klompen "In Full Bloom" as the winner of Klompen Garden, a brand new art project celebrating the 90th Tulip Time Festival.
Forty-five artists living in Ottawa, Allegan, Kent, Muskegon and Kalamazoo counties were invited to submit a design for the project. Now, 45 pairs of artfully designed large wooden shoes will be "growing" in city parks and tulip beds throughout the downtown Holland area.
Each artist received a large pair of wooden shoes to bring their concept to life.
Schulist is a painter and gardener who uses pallet knives, pencil erasers and endless bottles of paint to create acrylic paintings. She combines vivid colors of glossy, matte and metallic paints to produce striking artwork.
Her klompen will be on display in the lobby of the Holland Civic Center during the festival.
The remaining 44 pairs will compete for the People's Choice award. The public can vote for their favorites from May 1 to 11.
The top three picks will be announced May 12. First-place will win $500, second-place will take home $300 and third-place gets $200.
You can vote on Facebook by liking the original image of your favorite artwork. Each like is one vote.
