GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Hyundai owners concerned amid an uptick in stolen Hyundais will have multiple opportunities to receive a free security update this weekend.

Hyundai Motor America is partnering with the Grand Rapids Police Department to host several clinics that will bolster certain models' security.

All participating and eligible Hyundai owners will receive a free software upgrade with new anti-theft technology and a steering wheel lock. After the upgrade is installed, the vehicle will not be able to be started without the keys. The vehicle will need to be locked with the key fob in order to activate this "ignition kill" feature.

You do not need to register or schedule an appointment to receive the upgrades, and there is no cost.

This uptick in thefts has been ongoing after a TikTok trend showed how certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles can be quickly stolen, resulting in groups of teens stealing cars to take on joyrides or use in crimes.

This has been seen in major cities all across the nation.

The clinic will be held at 555 Monroe Avenue NW in Grand Rapids. It is open on Sunday, April 28 from noon to 6 p.m. It will be open again from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 29 and Tuesday, April 30.
