GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Canal Street Park in Grand Rapids is set to get a major facelift as part of a park improvement plan.
A portion of the $18.95 million budget to improve parks in the city will be used to make the improvements at Canal Street Park.
The park is located along the Grand River, just north of I-196 in downtown Grand Rapids.
The planned improvements for the park include:
- A "River Story" universally accessible play space
- Multi-purpose plaza with rentable enclosed pavilion for events
- River overlooks and seating terraces
- River landing with an accessible kayak launch platform

The new "River Story" play area will have "poured-in-place surfacing, play towers and bridges, stone steppers, play sculptures, and an Owashtanong river story interpretive art paving inlay."
The planned improvements will also focus on flood protection, ecological health and providing an accessible community gathering place.
The City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department says that construction is expected to begin within the next two years.

Other parks in Grand Rapids that have planned improvements include: Martin Luther King Lodge, Roosevelt Lodge, Plaza Roosevelt, Sullivan Field, Richmond Park, Highland Park, Ottawa Hills Park, Otsego Drain Basin conversion, Camelot Park and Roberto Clemente Park.
